You must have a USAT license or buy a one day license for this event. This race, originated by Johnny Shunny, held its first event in 1977. In 1979, it was named for the founder’s friend and co-worker – an athlete and an event participant who passed away from complications due to diabetes. Some of Jay Benson’s relatives have participated almost every year and a portion of the proceeds go directly to Juvenile Diabetes. Kirtland Air Force Base You must enter KAFB at the Gibson Gate (located at Lousiana Blvd). Current driver’s license, registration and proof of insurance will be required. Have your documents ready! Attention All Guests: Participants, spectators, friends, family and anyone else who may accompany the participant, must be on the Official Base List. Email Ange angie@nmsportsystems.com to put people on the Base Entry List. Remember those not on the list WILL NOT be permitted on the base race day. Jay Benson Triathlon Rules: Run – 3 miles All athletes are required to wear race numbers at all times during the run. Numbers must face the front and be clearly visible at all times. Numbers may not be cut or folded or altered in any way. DO NOT transfer your number to any other athlete or take a number from an athlete that is not competing. Penalty: Variable time penalty for missing or altered number, Disqualification and one year suspension from membership in USAT for transferring a number without race director permission. Bike – 20K Bike must be racked and ready in the transition area (transition area is “first-come, first-serve,” so be early if you want a preferred spot). There are NO GLASS containers in the Transition Area All BAR ENDS must be properly plugged. Penalty: Variable time penalty This is a NO Drafting event. Keep at least three bike lengths of clear space between you and the cyclist in front. If you move in the zone, you must pass within 15 seconds. Penalty: Variable time penalty Chin straps must be buckled at all times when on a bicycle. DO NOT unbuckle your chin strap unless you are off your bicycle. Penalty: Disqualification on the course; Variable time penalty in transition area only. Only HELMETS approved by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) may be used in USAT sanctioned events. Helmets must be worn at all times while on your bike. This means before, during, and after the event. Penalty: Disqualification Swim – 400 meters Swimmers may rest at each end or on the lane lines if necessary. No jogging or walking in the pool. Penalty: 3 minute deduction. Swim on the far right except to pass. A touch on the toes means move to the right so that the overtaking swimmer may pass. Kicking, elbowing or swimming over another participant is not allowed. Penalty: 3 minute deduction. PACKET PICK-UP Packet pick-up will be at Sport Systems: Saturday, May 8th – 11am to 5pm First Timers Participant Mtg – 1pm We will discuss rules, course, transition and clarify any questions participants may have. Each participant must present a photo ID and USAT license or one-day license. You must read & sign the waiver / releases form. You must pick up and sign registration papers. You MAY NOT have someone else other than you pick up your packet, teams included. THERE IS NO RACE DAY REGISTRATION – THIS EVENT SELLS OUT EVERY YEAR – SIGN UP EARLY!
